MISKOLC NATIONAL THEATRE MUSEUM OF ACTORS AND THEATRE HISTORY, MISKOLC The first theatre building to house a Hungarian company was built in Miskolc in 1823. The building burned down in 1845. The present-day classicist theatre building was designed by József Cassano and constructed on the same site between 18471857. Its tower was erected in 1884 for watching for fires. The auditorium was refashioned in 1925 in neobaroque style, and the wooden roof structure was replaced by a reinforced concrete dome. The building was reconstructed between 19561959, and a new wing was added to house dressing rooms. The complete restoration of the theatre was carried out between 1991-1997, resulting one of Central Europe's most modern theatrical centres. Besides the grand theatre a studio theatre, a small performance room and an open-air stage were included in the new complex, completed with stage set halls and workshops. The offices are housed in a newlybuilt wing, as are the twenty apartments for actors. The early 19th century classicist building adjacent to the theatre, that also comprises the frontal wall of the original building of 1823, was converted into a museum of actors and theatre history, on the initiative and public collections of a renowned, since deceased Miskolc actor. The building complex is one of the most important historic monuments of Miskolc.
