ORCZY GARDEN, BUDAPEST Orczy Garden was originally built pursuant to the plans of Bernhard Petri, and used to be one of the most beautiful landscape gardens of Pest. Ludoviceum, the Hungarian military academy, designed by Mihály Pollack, was erected on the edge of the garden in the middle of the 19th century. The garden decayed thoroughly after the Second World War, and the consciously landscaped park was interspersed with impromptu buildings and paving. In the first phase of restoration the buildings that were considered out of place and that had lost their original function were pulled down; the entire area was re-landscaped; the walks, the rock garden and the ruined artificial mount were restored according to the original plans; and the plants and lawns were replaced. The restoration work carried out in this garden has done justice to the history of Hungarian landscape gardens. Together with the Museum of Natural Science that was recently opened in the building of the former Ludoviceum and the nearby Botanical Garden the Orczy Garden features an additional botanicaleducational function, too.
