MŰHELY - Sarkadi Márton: A gyulafehérvári székesegyház és érseki palota 1999-2002 között végzett helyreállítási munkáinak tanulságai
the reconstruction was made working out the points of a new use and new institutions, like a diocesan and cathedral museum. Many of the causes of further damages were stopped with the repair of the roof and drainage. The reconstruction of the archiépiscopal palace's northern façade was finished. It was more than a simple renovation as interiors, roofs, drainage were also refurbished.n the course of this work was it realized that the present building has considerable parts of the medieval palace. (This wing was destroyed in 1996 when offices were formed in it!) The static diagnostics of the baroque sacristy was started and plans of its general reconstruction and static reinforcement were made and executed (although it would be finished only after the expiration of cooperation). A series of stone restoration works were done with the help of expert restorers with a cooperation of the archiépiscopal stonemasons. The conservation of the carved stone window frames built into the palace's northern façade was finished. The main cornice of the main apse fallen down in 1999 was reconstructed and the surrounding medieval and newer parts and wall surfaces were restored. The stone spires of he side apses were also conserved and the medieval surface of the northern tower's eastern façade. The sad importance of it was that during the undocumented rebuilding of 1967, 1973, 1990 and 1996 the medieval surfaces of the other facades were all damaged, so the last original wall surface was saved. Stress was lyaed on the preservation of medieval wall remains, with a technical and aesthetic minimum of supplements. The baroque fence of the western porch was waterproofed, conserved and supplemented, the statues were also conserved. Several important stone fragments were put together and saved. Archaelogical excavations could be made as a result of financial reasons only at the preparation of building. Still our knowledge was much widened as a result of the work of Daniela Marcu archaeologist which should be soon published. Unfortunately the conflicts with the archiepiscopate have seriously hindered work. The formerly discussed yearly plan could not often be followed as a result of denying signing the contracts and delays in paying caused many problems. As a result of the archiepiscopate's having the operative power this could not be prevented. Their concept was seemingly making impossible the work of the Hungarian organizers and this way proving their failure and not letting them work on. Following the expiration of the cooperation agreement in 2002 the archiepiscopate did not want to continue it, although they still needed the Hungarian financial support. At the beginning of 2004 archbishop György Jakubinyi asked again the architect Herman Fabini, elected in the meantime a member of the upper house to lead the reconstruction work of the cathedral.
