Márton SARKADI: RESULTS OF THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE GYULAFEHÉRVÁR (ALBA IULIA) CATHEDRAL AND ARCHIEPISCOPAL PALACE MADE BETWEEN 1999-2002 The reconstruction of the most important group of monuments of the Carpathian basin at the end of the last century took a new turn and then it was a failure again. Failure means in this case not only the lack of success but it also foreshadows the danger of that bad practice characterizing the 90s with a low quality, unreasonable rebuilding and not taking into consideration the points of monument protection, not using the results of research. Let us look over again the events. At the end of the eighties the episcopate has organized and started the reconstruction of the cathedrals western towers. The work missing due expert's preparation and made by stonemasons untrained in building reconstruction was irreparably harmful. Around the base the surface of the broad-stone cover of the building was carved off and replaced with thin stone panels. Unfortunately the work stopped as a result of benevolent warnings did not turn to a better direction later. With the commissioning of the famous Saxon architect, Herman Fabini the reconstruction went on officially allowed in a higher technical level with the reorganization of the stonemason workshop, still an essential change of view did not happen. The destruction of medieval stone surfaces continued on a large part of the façade. Between 1992 and 1996 the majority of the medieval ornaments forming the western façade of the northern tower and as a result of this its historical authenticity was lost forever. Reconstruction work was not followed by research and documentation. The whole was repeated in the case of the Episcopal palace. The northern wing once having representative spaces has lost its several layers of painted plaster and plaster panel walls divided the space to smaller size rooms. Research and documentation did not follow the work. Several other changes not suiting to the building could be mentioned like the exchange of traditional roofing with concrete tiles. Beside the evidently necessary, but badly made repairing of the cathedral's walls several unnecessary works can be mentioned. The strangest of them was the transformation of the furniture. One of the best works of Transylvanian late baroque sculpture, the high
