often uncontrolled. The owner, or those ordering the work want to .enforce his (their) claims by all means referring to the expectations of society. It is an increasingly difficult task for experts to solve this contradiction. The writings of two outstanding art historians - Ernő Marosi from Hungary and Wolfgang Wolters from Germany - have called the attention of monument protection experts, mainly art historians to that the change of the view of historical interiors is the result of falsely interpreted restoration and reconstruction and might ruin the values of certain historical sources. The restoration of two important churches - the roman catholic parish church in Nova (Zala county) and the abbey of Zirc (Veszprém county) gave rise to basic, but different theoretical questions. The restoration of the murals of Nova painted by István Dorffmaister began in 1997 following three 20 th century restorations with the vault in the worst condition. The restorer's concept was to remove all later completions and layers, considered the 20 th century restorations as not worth preserving and the reconstruction was made on the basis of the 5 % remaining Dorffmaister murals without having the documents of the original state. The reconstructed Annunciation scene is only a vision of the original work of the baroque painter and there is no way to stop reconstruction accepted by public taste. The interior reconstruction of the abbey of Zirc started in 1995. The baroque interior was totally reconstructed in 1891 and the murals painted by József Wagenmeister between 1744-48 were restored, the baroque altarpieces repainted. The interior was reflecting late 19 th century taste. As a result of restorers' research it became clear that the murals were not only repainted by Ferenc Innocent in 1891 and the subject matter of the side chapels were also changed. Only the vaults were covered with murals, the other surfaces were undecorated. The baroque colouring of the altars have remained and the representatives of the order and restorers unanimously agreed in their restoration although there was not enough information concerning their state. Fortunately enough the vault frescoes were in relatively good condition so there little completion was needed. The reconstruction of the 18 th century baroque interior was however not possible because of major changes of the last 250 years. It was necessary to destroy the late 19 th century murals to show the baroque frescoes so the precious historicising interior was lost. In the majority of our baroque churches the neo-baroque ornamental murals were destroyed undocumented for monument protection.
