MŰHELY - Iványosi-Szabó Andrea: A Csongrád-ellésmonostori árpád-kori templom építő- és díszítőkőanyagának kőzettani, földrajzi vizsgálata

Andrea IVÁNYOSI-SZABÓ THE GEOLOGICAL AND PETROLOGIC INVESTIGATION OF THE BUILDING STONES AND CARVINGS OF THE MONASTERY IN CSONGRÁD-ELLÉSMONOSTOR The investigation of the stones of Csongrád-EUésmonostor church took place in 199394 on the site and in the deposit of László Tari Museum, Csongrád. When dividing the stone types, in a few cases thin section was also made in the Attila József University, Szeged, Department of geology and Paleontology, in the case of a few types however only macroscopic investigation could be made. On the basis of the petrologic investigation of the carvings remained from the destroyed monastery built in the Árpád-Age, the followings can be told. Its stones originate from different territories of the Carpathian Basin, far away from each other: the red limestone from Gerecse mountain, Sarmatian limestone, Carpathian sandstone, limnetic limestone and marble from Transylvania, rhyolite tufa and dacite from the Northern Mountains. Building and decorating stones, according to the geological and economic circumstances of the age were transported by ship most probably. The basement stones originate from the territory between the Danube and the Tisza rivers. The bricks of the monastery were made in the brick-works of Várkút, 2,5 kilometres north-east from the monastery hill. The result of the investigation might be supported by comparing the stones to those of the supposed mines and other monuments' stones. In the case of the building stones this was made with the stones of SzékkutasKápolnásdűlő and those of the Franciscan church in Szeged-Lower-city. Further proofs can be get by investigating the connections of the builder family. The investigation of the church's stones can help this way the work of archaeologists and art historians.
