Erzsébet TURÁNYI THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ST. JOHN- AND PAULCHAPEL IN SZEKSZÁRD The reconstruction was preceded by the restoration of the early 19th century hospital building connected with it. The study is a shorter version of a diploma work made at the Technical University, Budapest, faculty of monument protection engineering. The complex task was the following: the exterior and interior reconstruction of the monument, restoration of wall-paintings and statues, the planning of the interior equipment and surroundings. The planning was based on preliminary investigation from the points of art history and restoration, and archival sources with diagnostic investigation of the wall wetness and insulation. The architectural history could be traced and the reconstruction could be made based on it. The history of the hospital refers to two building periods. Following the investigation of the eastern facade a third period could be discovered. The central domed space with the tower proved to be a small independent building of central plan and the annexes were built to it on both sides only later. This discovery was embarrassing as the foundation document from 1778 was describing „a chapel built by us with high costs". This must have been the completion of an already existing building, the earlier function of which was not clear, it might have been a road-side chapel. The history of the second enlargement in 1802 was well known, the chapel was attached then to the hospital building. The different building periods are shown by the differences of the door and windows. The outlook of this building with several periods is bearing however the signs of Baroque style. In the course of the restoration of the interior walls and vaults several layers were discovered. The whole surface can be seen only in the northern part, on other places details can be observed. Following the building of the chapel it was it was decorated with wall-paintings at the beginning of the 19th century. This was restored according to the suggestion of the restoration jury. The statue of St. Florian above the entrance got there only later. After restoration and conservation it got to the museum's collection and a copy was put to its place. The second part of the study is describing the details of planning and reconstruction.
