László GERE FRAGMENTS OF A GOTHIC CHANDELIER AND CANDLESTICK FROM THE CASTLE OF OZORA In the course of the excavations of the castle of Filippo Scolari built between 14161426, 115 pieces of bronze fragments were found. When trying to date them X-ray emission experiments were made. The material of an object is not determining its age in itself, but using it the fragments could be differentiated. The similar material of different objects from the same time might refer to that they originate from the same workshop. The knowledge of workshop centres in time and space might make easier the dating of an object. When dating the finds archaeological and art historical methods should also be used naturally. As a result of examining the chandelier fragments some of them were made at the end of the 15 th century, others at the first third of the 16 th century. Their material is similar, so they might have been made in the same workshop, but in different time. The reconstruction of the chandelier could be made on the basis of the one seen on Jan van Eyck's painting, "The Arnolfini Marriage Group". Parts of the chandelier represented on the painting made in 1434 are identical with that of Ozora. Another one from Kőszeg castle is similar to it also. Candlesticks of Ozora have parallels with the candlestick with human figure from Borsod county. According to literature Gothic candlesticks resembling to this group were made in Southern Germany in Nürnberg, the centre of goldsmith' art. The elements of the chandelier at Ozora can be dated to the beginning of the 15 th century. The must have been bought by the order of Pipo of Ozora, either in Flanders or in Southern Germany. The reconstruction of the chandelier might be drawn on the basis of the one represented on the painting. The 13 pieces of fragments of candlesticks can be put to three groups on the basis of their material and form. Candlesticks with handles decorated with balusters could be made at the second half of the 15 th century. The finds of Buda have a similar date. Similar candlestick can be seen on Dürer's engraving "The birth of the Virgin" made in 1503. Another group of candlesticks could be made later, at the end of the 15 tn beginning of the 16 th century. Another type can be seen on paintings of Jan van Eyck and engravings of Dürer, and was spread in the second third of 15 th century. It was manufacture till the first third of the 16 th century.
