MŰHELY - Koppány Tibor: A pápóci Szent Mihály-kápolna kutatása és helyreállítása
the restauration of this latter was made by the National Board of Historical Monuments, the survey and plan was made by the author of this study. All the comprehensive Hungarian architectural historical books and of the last decades studies have dealt with the chapel belonging to the group of Romanesque rotundas. There are several opinions concerning the date of its building, as its plan and the framing decoration of its Southern gate, and interiour details are contradictory as regards their date. That is the reason why it was dated either to the 12th century or to the 13th. The survey of 1964 had stated that the Southern gate showing characteristics of the 13th century did not belong to the building originally. It was part of a today unknown, destroyed church, and was built most probably in the newly made opening of the chapel's wall in 1739. The original entrance was found in the Western apse. Considering its simple forms, and the details determining its style on both storeys, it could be stated that the chapel was built in the 12th century. It was proved that the school building joining to the chapel with 19th century facades was built on the remains of an Augustinian convent from the 14th century. The walls of the church were also unearthed in the yard. In the course of the restoration of the present three aisled parish church standing on the other side of the street it was discovered that its choir was Gothic, so it could be identified with the provostal church. Finally, on the basis of historical facts it could be stated that the medieval church of St. Nicholas stood in the territory of the present cemetery. This identification of the medieval churches made it possible to identify the two storeyed rotunda with the St. Lawrence parish church. Its restoration was made according to its newly found state with slight changes.
