András PETRAVICH THE WORK OF FERENC MENDELE (1934-1994), YBL-PRIZE AWARDED ARCHITECT Ferenc Mendele (1934-1994) was one of the most outstanding architects of Hungarian monument protection following the 2nd World War. Since 1960 till his death he has been working at the National Inspectorate of Historic Monuments, first as an architect, then in different leading positions, at one time as the Director of the office. His scientific work is also important, mainly in the fields of folk architecture. His work was awarded with Ybl-prize and several other distinctions. His work was exhibited in Budapest, between 21.7.1995. - 20.10.1995., and then in Nyíregyháza between 14.11.-15.12.1995., organized by the Hungarian Museum of Architecture of the National Board for the Protection of Historic Monuments, and by the author of this study. The exhibition tried to give a view of the works, showing the most characteristic ones mainly done in the 1960's and in the first half of the 1970's. The best documented 34. plans were presented in the exhibitions. The reconstructions were shown by plans and photos with a short explanatory text, among them a few exact survey manuals. This material was completed with documents: the medals and diplomas of Ferenc Mendele, and books written by him. His works were divided into three important groups by the organizer: the exhibition was beginning with medieval village churches, among them the one in Csempeszkopács (1967-1969), Egregy-Hévíz (1964-1965), or the Chapel of Our Lady in Hédervár (1988-1994), the reconstruction of which was his last work. This was followed by the castles and other non-religious buildings, like the Castle of Dunaföldvár (1968-1975), the Georgicon Manor in Keszthely (1970-1977). The second half of the exhibition was dealing with the folk monuments restored by him, stressing the role of the village rehabilitation in Hollókő (since 1961). Among the plans of reconstruction a folk monuments are the Schumacher-house in Nagyvázsony (1960-1962), the water mill in Túristvándi (1962-1965), the belfry in Pankasz (19641965), the wind mills in Kiskunhalas and Tés (1964-1966 and 1973-1977). The catalogue - beside reproducing the material of the whole exhibition - is giving the list of the planning works and literature of the writings of Ferenc Mendele, and studies of his outstanding colleagues, like Miklós Horler, Nándor Gilyén, János Sedlmayr, Klára Nándori, László Császár and Anna Kaiser. The catalogue was edited by András Petravich, the foreword was written by László Pusztai.
