MŰHELY - Lángi József: A mesztegnyői ferences templom falképei és berendezése
The wall painting of the St. Elizabeth altar is damaged. The oil on canvas altarpiece is flanked by the grisaille representations of St. Cathrine and St. Barbara. The altarpieces is representing St. Elizabeth distributing alms. Her face is the portrait of Elizabeth Haller, the first wife of the patron. The tabernacle was destroyed. On the parapet of the pulpit badly repainted and bronze powdered there is a gilt relief of St. Anthony preaching to the fishes. It was partly damaged in 1966 and was not expertly restored. The parapet of the choir was originally decorated with ornamental painting, which is covered with white-wash today. The fragments of the stalls are placed in the stairs leading to the tower. Here is a damaged painting from the refectory representing the Dinner at Emmaus. Its pendant is to be found in the sacristy, showing three scenes of the martyrdom of St. John of Nepomuk. One of the most beautiful religious monuments of Somogy county is the Franciscan church of Mesztegnyő. Its furnishings and the high quality wall paintings of István Dorffmaister were damaged in the 2nd World War, but the fragments remained make possible an authentic restoration. This work however, would be made only with the help of experts and the necessary financial means.
