János SEDLMAYR THE WORKS OF THE ARCHITECT FERENC ERDEI Exhibition in the Aula of the National Board for the Protection of Historic Monuments Our plan is to organize yearly one exhibition of the works of an architect in the aula of the National Board for the Protection of Historic Monuments. According to this, second tie the works of Ferenc Erdei were shown here, an architect, who has been since the foundation of the National Inspectorate of Monuments an outstanding personality of the protection of monuments in Hungary; the designer of more than fifty reconstructions, author of several theoretical works and studies, etc. The first, introductory tableau of the exhibition is a short survey of Ferenc Erdei's work and career. Besides there is a list of his works, finished reconstruction plans, his plans for new liturgical buildings, competitions and his most important studies. This first part is a convincing proof of the outstanding results of his thirty years' career. It would have been even greater, had he not died very early, at the age of fifty-five. Following the introductory tableau we could find the different of his activity: surveys (Palazzo Falconieri in Rome, Vértesszentkereszt), protecting building (St. George chapel in Veszprém, Archdeacon's church, Visegrád), protection of substance of ruins (Castle of Tata, Somogyvámos), old buildings with new function (Budapest, Centre of the Inspectorate of Monuments, chapel of Alcsut), new parts in old buildings (the Roman Catholic church of Csácsbozsok), new buildings (guest house in Alcsut, Oskola st. 11, Székesfehérvár) and finally interiour design (Pötörke-mill in Tata, the mansion of Zsennye). I would like to deal with two of the above mentioned works: the protecting building of the St. George chapel in Veszprém and the guest house in the park of the Alcsut mansion. Both are characteristic works of Erdei: simple, well-arranged and well-done to the smallest details.
