MŰHELY - Basics Beatrix: „Pesth und Ofen" — Ludwig Rohbock metszetsorozata

z. Beatrix BASICS „PESTH UND OFEN". A SERIES OF ETCHINGS BY LUDWIG ROHBOCK In 1859 a book was published with Hungarian and German text-versions of János Hunfalvy and the steel engravings of Ludwig Rohbock. The topic was — contrary to the earlier work on Hungary and Transylvania — only Pest —Buda and its environment. The theme of this writing are only the engravings showing Pest and Buda. Many of the representations are views of the two cities — like the title-page of Pest and the Gellért Hill, or the view of Buda and Pest, Pest and the Rácztown, or the cities from the Gellért Hill. The View from the Castle Hill of Buda and the Buda Castle and Christina-town show only Buda, or a part of it. There are two engravings on the newly built Lánchíd (Chainbridge) — one is a view from it, the other is a genre scene on it. This latter type of representation is present however on all of the engravings, even when the subject is as a matter of fact a famous building. These buildings are mainly ones not to be seen nowadays (like the Emperor's Mills, the City Hall of Pest, or the Rác-church), or their form and surroundings differ from the present state (like Mathias church, and buildings on the Danube bank). Romantic pieces can also be found, such are the engravings of the ship-mills, of the City Park or the Váci cemetery. Certain buildings — like the so-called Pekáry-house in Király street — were built not much earlier than the time of the publication. The value of the series is immeasurable, as a pictorial and written source of the capital's history. Text and pictures are important in themselves - the former as a guide of scientific and artistic value, the latter as treasures of the history and art, architecture of the period.
