KIÁLLÍTÁS - Vadas Ferenc: A soproni színház. Kiállítás a rekonstrukcióról

die im Katalog noch hätten reproduziert werden sollen, besonders jene, die den Planungsprozeß Medgyaszays zur Schau stellen, der schließlich zur Erschaffung der meisterhaften Haupttreppe führte. Ferenc VADAS THE THEATRE IN SOPRON — EXHIBITION OF THE RECONSTRUCTION The exhibition, organized on two sites, Budapest and Sopron, is about an unusual renovation. The Classicist building of the theatre was rebuilt in 1909 by István Medgyaszay, an outstanding representative of Hungarian Art Nouveau. In the interior he built a new stage, auditorium and staircase, as to the exterior he reconstructed the facade, with the exception of the operation part. His work is the synthesis of modern reinforced concrete construction and folk art ornamental motives. In the 60's the theatre was restored and modernized, and although the work of Medgyaszay was meant to be preserved, much was taken away from it. This latest reconstruction tried to restore everything possible from the Medgyaszay work. However, it was only partly successful. The original central projection with the sgrafitti should be copied to the facade of the lengthened lounge, which raises the question in connection with the reconstruction of 20th century buildings: in possession of fully detailed documentation what extent of rebuilding should be allowed? The exhibition — with the help of original plans and photos - shows almost the complete history of the building, together with other material concerning the audience for example. The catalogue — having an unusual size, and made by computer — contains list of the objects and a study of Ferenc Dávid on the history of the building. The recension appreciates the content but raises objections against the standard of part of the photos and criticizes the editing of the illustrations. It lists up those plans which should have been reproduced in the catalogue, mainly those that show the process of planning leading to the construction of the brilliant main stairs of Medgyaszay.
