Géza ENTZ THE CHURCH AND THE PROTECTION OF HISTORIC MONUMENTS BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS (Paper read on the conference „Ecclesiastical History and Protection of Historic Monuments" 24th November 1992, organized by the Hungarian Ecclesiastical Historical Enzyclopedia Found and the Inspectorate of Historic Monuments.) Following the foundation of the National Committee of the Historic Monuments in 1872, organized Hungarian protection of historic monuments was active on the territory of the historic Hungary in the Carpathian Basin. As the central part of the country was destroyed during the Turkish invasion, the protection of historic monuments was restricted mainly to Transylvania, to Northern Hungary and to the Western boundaries at that time; in territories, which were preserved from the destroying of other parts. Although the central part of the country did not totally lack protection work, but it was not present however in the artistic centres of the medieval country almost completely vanished since then. Following the First World War as a result of the division of the country, protection of historic monuments became centred on the central territories. Among others, this was the start of the archeological excavations of ancient artistic centres and research work in connection with the restoration of other remaining historic monuments. Research work became one of the basic factors of the protection of historic monuments. Beside secular centres religious ones were also discovered, and although fragmentarily, displayed. These works were assisted by the Church. The archbishop of Esztergom and the bishop of Székesfehérvár are outstanding examples of this cooperation. A special mention should be made of Antal Lepold canon prelate in Esztergom having contributed to the restoration of the Royal and later Archiépiscopal Palace and the treatment of works of the protection of historic monuments there. Protection of historic monuments between the two World Wars led by Tibor Gerevich and Kálmán Lux thus prepared the scientific and methodological views which after the Second World War proved to be ideological and practical guideline for the further work of protection of historic monuments in Hungary.
