András Végh: Medieval Terracotta finds from the royal Palace of Buda

26. AN 1983. 58-61. Zolnay had no chance to have the works of the daggers stopped. All he could negotiate was that the 15 vans which were carrying the debris off the site deposited the debris at Szt. György square. There Zolnay's assistants did there best to pick up valuable fragments. A second chance to double check the debris opened later, when the whole lot was transported in the Western Outer Ward where it was used fill in spaces of the western wall. The report also mentions the corner ashlers of the tower. These blunt angle carvings (among them a moulding fragment of the pedestal) which had formed part of the tower in its polygonal stage were well recognisable among the debris. The large size stones, which had been lifted from Dry Moat II can be seen today in the 'Újvilág-kert'. 27. Gerevich 1966. 22-26., Fig. 11. 28. Gerevich 1966. 26. It is to be noted that the exact place of the explosion is not known. The sources refer to a so called Tower of the Cot-of-arms which was struck by lightening and exploded. This tower has not yet been identified. Based on the archaeological finds, in particular the Mohammed III coin an other explosion in 1603 is a more likely cause for the demolition. On this occasion the castle was fired at from the Pest side, which at that time was controlled by Christian forces. The gun tower was hit and the explosion ruined a long portion of the walls. The exact place of the explosion, however, is in this case is likewise obscure. 29. Gerevich 1966. 29-39.; Zolnay 1984. 203-216.; AN 1978. 19-34.; AN 1983. 58-61.; AN 1984. Lately Imre Holl made it known (Holl 1987-88. 188.), but he does not mention the terracotta pieces. The catalogue in which finds of the Buda excavations are classed according to the site of disclosure, only mention mediaeval finds coming from the deposit. Among them are many small items and coins, the latter dating the debris to the reign of King Mattias I Corvinus, e.g. Inv.Nr. 52.1979. (Sigismund of Luxemburg), Inv.Nr. 52.197 (Vladislav I), Inv.Nr. 52.1977, 52.199 (Joh Hunyadi regent), Inv.Nr. 52.1998 (Ladislaus V Posthumus Habsburg), Inv. The site is mentioned in the stone inventories of BTM-KO. 46. Gerevich 1966. 101-103. 47. Gerevich 1966. 91-92.; AN 1949-1950. 25. 31. 33-34. 47-62. 80-85. 89-91.; AN 1949-51. 15-20. 48. The description of this layer is not included in the monography and the documentation of the excavations are not available. The catalogue of minor pieces mentions that there was a last century jug found in the same layer. (BTM-KO Inv. Nr. 51. 218) 49.
