Haris Andrea: A vasvári domonkos kolostor építéstörténete
The Architectural History of the Dominican Monastery of Vasvár Andrea Haris The Dominican Monastery of Vasvár was founded in the middle of the 1240s. The research carried out in 1985 and in 1986, which was mostly confined to the facades, revealed the previously unknown mediaeval remains, beside also determining the later major rebuildings. The church, together with the wings of the monastery adjoining it from the south, was built in the middle of the 13th century in the course of major construction work. The church has until this day preserved its mediaeval groundplan and arrangement of mass, which was only modified by the Baroque vaulting of the nave. The bell-tower adjoining the church from the north, with the exception of the Baroque level at the top, was also built in that period. The two-storey mediaeval wings of the monastery survived in a more fragmented form. The dormitory was in the western wing, while on the ground floor of the southern wing it was possible to identify the kitchen and the refectory. On the eastern side only the one storey vestry adjoining the chancel from the south was completed. After the 13th century, no other major reconstruction was carried out, during the Middle Ages only a few minor changes were reintroduced. Of these, the construction of the cloister was the most important; in this case, however, only the foundation survived (used later as the foundation for the Baroque cloister). In 1557 the friars left the monastery to flee the danger of Turkish attacks. The abandoned buildings went into the possession of laymen. Between 1644 and 1670 János Akosházi Sárkány ordered to build a three-storey tower at the intersection of the western and the southern wings, also modifying the rooms in the southern wing. The friars returned to their ancient home in 1690, gradually restoring the monastery in the following years. First the western wing and the western section of the southern wing were made habitable. The plans of the Baroque reconstruction of the monastery was completed around 1760 by Kristóf Hofstädter, who was regularly employed by the Prince Festetics family at Keszthely. However, the plan was realized only in parts. The eastern wing was not completed, and the work on the cloister by the southern side of the church was also stopped. The one-storey construction of the eastern wing probably took place in 1868. Between 1929-1939 a new storey was added to both the eastern and the southern wing. Illustrations 1.
