Bartos György: Megjegyzések a soproni ferences templom és kolostor építéstörténetéhez

The western gallery of the church is not readily fitted into this architectural history, with the tracery of its balustrade dating back to the early 15th century, and with information concerning the funds set up to build its organ suggesting a date sometime after 1450. There are several similar uncertainties and unexplored aspects, all of them suggesting that the complex study of the interior of the church and monastery, two important monuments in the architectural history of Hungary, should be launched as soon as possible. Illustrations 1. The northern facade of the church 2. The groundplan of the church and the adjoining parts of the monastery. The irregularities of the north wall of the chapter are easily recognizable. 3. The windows of the chancel the trefoiled tracery, which has capitals and bases, the latter decorated with consoles in a similar fashion that is seen at the base of the western door. 4. The northern windows of the chancel the frame have complicated moulding, the tracery is heart-shaped or pointed trefoiled, the mullions have no capitals and have a different base. 5. The western door after the restoration; the small consoles of the base are clearly visible. 6. The north facade with the windows narrowed after the construction of the tower; the lower levels of the tower with the portal featuring a goat in the coat of arms. 7. The north-south axis of the nave, viewed from the bottom of the tower towards the St. John of Capistrano's pulpit, with the canopied statues of the pillars and the donor's sculpture in front of the quadro-foil traceries balustrade of the western gallery. 8. The north-eastern pillar of the nave with the canopy of the Holy Virgin's statue (not shown in picture 7). The place of the chancel-screen together with the compound piers of the chancel are shown in the background. 9. The "angel-herald" figure of the console with the coat-of-arms featuring a goat on the south-eastern pillar of the nave. 10. 14th century shield, used either for tournament or for burial, together with the panache featuring a goat's head fastened to it. 11. Responds of the nave-vault decorated with floral patterns rising from a mask.
