THE PHYLOSOPHY OF MONUMENT RESTORATION DEBATE - MODERATOR: ANDRÁS ROMÁN WHAT DO YOU THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL OF MONUMENT RESTORATION? Tamás Fejérdy In my opinion the goal of monument restoration is to present the values that we want to preserve as real values. Most of the monuments are buildings and not all have preserved its completeness. If everything went smoothly, if continuous maintenance worked well, even then there is a minimal limit, a condition of a monument that should be reached in order to have an efficient conservation. In fact this is mostly the technical side of it, including the process of conservation, restoration and other tasks. On the other hand, the goal is to show these buildings according to their values. This partly includes technical views as well, but this means a partly creative action which has been earned through a more serious evaluation, and which enables the production of values of monuments. János Sedlmayr Allow me not to speak about the main goals, but about-probably secondrate-aims that are not so obvious as the answer to the question whether wo should preserve them or not. 1 would like to talk about three things which are important in the process of setting an aim. First of all, the scientific cognition. Strangh solving problems in the field of history of architecture or protection of monuments that came up during some particular reconstruction. Secondly, it has always been very important for me that the reconstruction should give prominence to the found or existing values. To give prominence to those that almost disappear on a not restored building. Restoration should be a kind of process which is not conservation, but like an operation on a patient. It should not be carried out and it should traces, which have to be seen, have to improve. Tamás Fejérdy I could not agree more with Sedlmayr János. Likewise, or with other words I think the most important goal is to tell the truth, the building, as a result of the reconstruction should be real. It should stay simple and humble if it used to be simple and humble and it should be rich and pompous if it used to be rich and pompous, if these values preserved. I would say-although it is the answer to a following question- that is should be real and authentic. Why is it necessary? In my opinion it is important because society is prone to distort truth. To make values precise, as S. János mentioned. But why? To get to know them and as a result of the cognition it would influence the public, the society. If the reconstruction is correct, then it informs about truth precisely. It can show us something true from the 13th century or from the cultur of the 19th century. This gives the reason for me to think that the most important thing is how it affects people, the public, the atmosphere, the society and something in addition to keep the memory of the counrty fresh and alive, because it is about preserving the already racquired
