maintenance and the safeguarding of his work and its surroundings, what provided him some satisfaction. In Flanders the youngest monument is the own house (1955) of the still living modernistic architect R. Bream, one a pupil of Le Corbusier and later on chairman of the Royal Commission of Monuments and Sites for a while. As a childless widower he wants to entrust his beloved house and atelier to the State, making sure that it will pass safely to the future generations as a document and illustration of his work and commitment. It seems to be a wise decision and an example to follow, committing ourselves to safeguarding for the future of our recent past and present in the world of today with its accelerated changing processes. Significant elements of different periods, and certainly of our own, must have a chance to survive in a nearby future as representative for a culture, subculture of simply a plain way of life. By entering and protecting in time, without complexes, sentimentality or nostalgy relevant works of quality, spirit and imagination we will contribute to the image-building and dynamic, ,,complete" history of the twentienth century in the years two thousand and more. It could be a risky operation, but I guess it is worth to try it ourselves, for if we leave it to ,,time" to make a so called „natural selection", it could be even a more risky business, considering our quickly developing society in which architecture and culture are not automatically accepted as priorities.
