KÖZLEMÉNYEK - Dr. Dusek László: Cholnoky Jenő és a Magyar Földrajzi Társaság Alföld Bizottsága

The Alföld Committee of the Hungarian Geographical Society was created in 1908, after the completion of work in the highly successful Balaton Committee, led by Lajos Lóczy Sen. As President of the Alföld Committee Jenő Cholnoky, porfessor of the University of Kolozsvár was elected, who had reached outstanding achievements in Balaton research. The Alföld Committee was originally planned to study the Hungarian Great Plains for 10-75 years. Within the Committee several professional groups were formed and operated, led by eminent figures of Hungarian academic life. The scientists involved in the work of professional groups intended to reveal the natural and cultural values of the "most Hungarian macroregion”, the Alföld. Over the several decades of operation of the Committee, the objective could only partially be reached. There were successes in the organization of the meteorological network of the Alföld as well as in arhceological and botanical research. The geomorphological investigations of President Jenő Cholnoky led to the morphological typology of sand regions. Cholnoky provided advice to the afforestation and saline land utilization programmes of the Alföld. In more peaceful times the results could have been more remarkable. Because of World War I financial support to the Committee was reduced and leaders and key figures in the professional groups had to join the army. The continuation and completion of Alföld research became a task for the coming generations. Translated by Dr Dénes Lóczy 4.
