Dr. Gyula Gábris: Jenő Cholnoky, a professor of geography and protector of nature
NOTES 1 Jenő Cholnoky (1923): Protection of Natural Values - Geographical Review, LI,, pp. 117-120. 2 Extract from the autobiography written by Jenő Cholnoky in the spring and summer of 1945: J. Géczi (ed.): Jenő Cholnoky (1870-1950). - Vár ücca Tizenhét, Vol. I, No. 2. p. 299. Veszprém, 1998. 3 The date is missing from the manuscript. It is known that the legal protection of the environment started in Hungary under the leadership of Károly Kaan, as in 1938 he was appointed the president of the National Environmental Protection Council. He died in January 1940, and his successor was Cholnoky. 4 They did not have time either. Cholnoky became president just a year after the foundation. 5 From the autumn of 1940, those areas belonged to Hungary again. 6 He probably refers only to the plans and certain preparations, as the Tihany Peninsula was first declared protected in 1952. 7 Under the pressure of the most difficult war events, on 24 July 1944, at the proposal of the National Environmental Protection Council, the Ministry of Agriculture declared the Pál-völgy Cave a natural protection area.
