Dr. Gyula Gábris: Jenő Cholnoky, a professor of geography and protector of nature
<5> DR. GYULA GÁBRIS JENŐ CHOLNOKY, A PROFESSOR OF GEOGRAPHY AND PROTECTOR OF THE ENVIRONMENT / ~rvy H engineer by training, Jenő Cholnoky (1870-1950) turned to physical geography, where he could make good use of his technological expertise. His decision was largely influenced by the eminent Hungarian geographer, Lajos Lóczy. Later, he wrote, "engineering knowledge is invaluable in geography" as "you can hardly study especially physical geography" without it. The first large scale results of his research work are connected to his scientific analysis of Lake Balaton. Using exact (physical) methods, he explained the changes of the water level of the lake, the phenomenon of standing waves (seiche), the colour of the water and the ice processes. His explanations are valid even today. Cholnoky's favourite field of research was geomorphology: he made significant advances in almost all its branches, while being the first to create models and explain the surface development of various regions in the Carpathian Basin. He produced manyoutstanding results in the study of river erosion: the definition of river mechanism, the explanation of terrace development and the first synthesis of the terrace system of the River Danube and its affluents. Within a scientific research programme on the Great Hungarian Plain, he wrote his fundamental study on the regularities of the blown sand movement, and his name is connected to the recognition of the role of the upper Pliocene deflation in the formation of the Hungarian landscape. He was also internationally the first to give an explanation for the mechanism of the formation of frost polygons. He contributed significantly to the study of slopes and mass movement. His activity in karst morphology is also outstanding. The result of Cholnoky's manifold research and education activity is the first book on geomorphology written in Hungarian.
