OBSERVATIONS OF THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD BY HUNAGRIAN SCIENTISTS BEYOND THE POLAR CIRCLE IN 1769 Lajos Bartha , Jr. The paper summarizes the results of the first Hungarian scientific expedition led by Miksa Hell and János Sajnovics between 1768 and 1770. From among the various measurements those directed at geographical latitude, meteorological and magnetic phenomena are emphasized. A main objective of magnetic measurements was the study of changes in declination and a search for interactions between aurora borealis and magnetic disturbances. Unfortunately, the errors in measurements allowed erroneous conclusions to be drawn by the researchers. However, the results of the magnetic measurements at Vard0 unpublished until now are valuable evidence of the scientific importance of the expedition.
