London TORDAY E (1930): African races - London TORDAY MEMORIES IN LONDON Emil Torday, the outstanding scientist of British-Hungarian scientific relations spent the second half of his life in the service of the British Museum. He worked for this famous scientific institution between 1904 and 1931, and he lived in London from 1909 to 1931. The author of the article investigated the memorabilia, written materials and other objects connected with Emil Torday, supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences - Soros Foundation in 1989. He identified Torday's house and the hospital where he died. He found in the archives of the Royal Anthropological Institute photo collection which was taken in the Congo Basin, and he was able to make copies of the most valuable items, thanks to the financial generosity some of the I Iungarians living in the west. He managed to meet experts looking after the ethnographical heritage of Torday, and he visited his daughter Ursula Torday. Surprisingly, the tomb of the eminent traveller has not yet been discovered, though he is well remembered in England. More books and catalogues have been published in connection with his African work and collections. In November 1990 the Museum of Mankind opened a representative exhibition by John Mack, with the title "Emil Torday and the Arts of Congo". BBC Radio, in a special programme, together with some English newspapers, have expressed appreciation of Emil Torday's activities.
