és új-guineai etnológiai tanulmányúljára 1928-ban került sor Marie Bonaparte görög hercegnő anyagi támogatásával. Feleségével együtt utazott az Ausztrália szívében fekvő Allice Springsbe, s onnan a Hermannsburg misszió körzetébe. Itt hónapokat töltöttek az aranda és loritja törzs tagjai közt, tanulmányozták szokásaikat, mindennapi életüket. A szakmunkákon kívül érdekes megfigyeléseikről népszerű magyar nyelvű könyv is megjelent (1932). A kiemelteken kívül se szeri, se száma azoknak a magyar utazóknak, kutatóknak, akik századunkban Ausztrália földjét, a kontinens növény- és állatvilágát, valamint népeinek múltját és jelenét kutatták. Befejezésül még azokat említjük meg, akik ausztrál expedíciók keretében eljutottak az Antarktisz jégvilágába. Egy magyar származású orvos, Boda János (1924—) rekordidőt töltött Antarktikán a Wilkes és Davis állomáson, valamint Macquarieszigeten. Kiváló munkájáért az ausztrál kormánytól kitüntetést kapott, és tiszteletére hegyet neveztek el az Enderby Landen. A „Mount Boda" az egyetlen magyar név a dél-sarki kontinensen. Egy másik magyar orvos, Csordás István 1955-től szintén a Macquarie-szigeten szolgált, 1957—59 között pedig az Antarktikán egy ausztrál állomáson működött és orvosbiológiai kutatómunkát végzett. HUNGARIAN TRAVELLERS IN AUSTRALIA In the 1790s, Australia was included in the geography syllabus of Hungarian schools, identify of the first Hungarian to set foot on this distant land is nonetheless still unclarified. The first recorded Hungarian travellers arrived in Australia were some young merchants and craftsmen in the 1830s. After the suppression of the 1848—49 Hungarian War of Independence, many leaders of the Revolution were captured, executed, but many patriots managed to flee abroad. Sizeable groups of emigrants rallied in London to prepare for a new struggle. As the time went by the political aspirations of the refugees had gradually vanished, in fact they just managed to subsist. When the news of the gold rush in Victoria, Australia, began to pour in, the helpless Hungarian emigrants were again mobilized, and many of them decided to try their fortune in Australia. Among the Hungarian gold-diggers in Australia, Baron Caesar Mednyánszky was one of the most interesting figures. He was the prelate of the entire Hungarian insurrectionist army, and after the fall of the War of Independence he was sentenced to death, but managed to escape first to France and then to England. In Australia he, too, digged the ground and washed the gold, at did thousands of his fanatic fellows. However, Mednyánszky took up not only the spade, but also the pen, and made notes of what he saw in the Australia in the 1850s.
