MÓRIC BENYOVSZKY IN AMERICA Benyovszky's first stay (1773—1777) on Madagascar was only a partial success. The French connection had a disappointing effect on Benyovszky. His attention turned towards the United States. On September 25, 1777, he wrote a letter from Versailles to Benjamin Franklin, then American envoy to France. This was the first documentary evidence of Benyovszky's personal acquaintance with Franklin. In the meantime, Benyovszky offered his services to Emperor Joseph II, in order to get assistance for founding a colony on Madagascar. But his endeavor having no success. From now on, Benyovszky tried his fortune in the United States. In September, 1779, Benyovszky arrived in Philadelphia, the site of U.S. Continental Congress. He wrote a letter to Congress, in which he stated that he came to America "with a determined resolution to sacrifice myself the remainder of my life in your service". But in dealing with Congress, Benyovszky was most unfortunate. The Congress passed its judgment that "the circumstances of the army will not admit of his being employed", and ordered Benyovszky to "be dismissed". Arriving at Paris, Benyovszky reentered the French service, and renewed his relationship with Benjamin Franklin. On January 13, 1782, he left France for America. During his second stay in America, he turned towards the highest ranking, most experienced man: George Washington. He presented Benyovszky's plan to Congress which rejected it. Benyovszky once again returned to Europe with nothing achieved. Benyovszky returned to his original idea: the colonization of Madagascar. In order to get more financial aid, very soon a third and final journey to America was in the making. These tragic events led to the premature death of Móric Benyovszky on the island of Madagascar.
