CONCLUSIONS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Changes resulting from land cultivation, the grazing of livestock, forestry mismanagement and the increased use of pesticides and other toxic chemicals have had a devastating effect on the biology of the Bakony region and have been directly responsible for the declining numbers of many butterfly species. Its hoped that this monograph may increase public awareness concerning the plight of much of region's wildlife. It would be nice to think that in the not too distant future protected habitats could be set aside for the enjoyment of nature with some areas reverting back to their wild state. Acknowledgements go out to the program co-ordinators Dr. Jend Papp and Dr. Sándor Tóth for all their tireless work, to Mr. János Futó and Mr. István Galambos for helping to publish this monograph and to Ferenc Szabad for his help in supplying copies of the habitat distribution maps.
