Melitaea ogygia (FRUHSTORFER, 1908) Pale Fritillary (Item 60) The presence of this species in Europe remains uncertain but based on more recent surveys we have treated M. ogygia as a separate species. In previous literature it has been classified as a subspecies of Melitaea phoebe (ssp. kovácsi VARGA in Hungary). M. ogygia is reported to fly in two generations during the summer but to date only three specimens of this fritillary have been recorded from our region. The first specimen was collected in 1992 by Lajos Németh in the Tapolca Basin; the second, a spring brood male, was taken by the author on Mt. Kab's Arthur Field (Külső-Pótlék) during May 1992; and the third also a male was captured by the author at Sáfrány-Fields, Márkó (North Bakony) in July 1993. Not protected. Status in the Bakony: 1. Brenthis ino (ROTTENBURG, 1775) ssp. simulatrix DIETZEL 1990 Lesser Marbled Fritillary (Map 21, Item 72) Brenthis ino is a new addition to the fauna of the region and can be seen on the wing from mid June until the end of July. In Transdanubia only three colonies are known to exist, the most recent sighting comes from the Southern Bakony (Csinger-Valley, Kanász-Garden).The butterfly is very distinct in our region and has been named subspecies simulatrix by the author. Its preferred habitats are damp areas of forest meadows and seasonally wet marshes. Extremely small populations occur in these isolated and threatened areas. In the past few years many of these precious habitats have been threatened by forestry management programs and nearly half the forest areas in the region have been affected in some way. Its hostplants on Mt. Kab are believed to be species of the Rubus but Sanguisorba officinalis has been noted in a few restricted areas. Protected fauna. Status in the Bakony: 1. Argynnis pandora (DENIS et SCHIFFERMÜLLER, 1775) Cardinal (Map 22, Item 78) A rare butterfly in the Bakony region occasionally observed during the months of July and August. Regarded by the author as a vagrant this species was first recorded by Lajos Kovács in the 1950's at Dörgicse in the Balaton Highlands. In 1962 the author collected specimens, including one female, in the Rakottyás Valley near Herend. Up until 1993 these were the only specimens recorded from the Northern Bakony but during late July of this year the author observed a mating pair at Márkó. On July 22nd 1996 a worn female was recorded by the English entomologist Martin Gascoigne-Pees in the Esztergáli Valley, North of Veszprém. In some years the species can be found near Inota and Kincsesbánya in the Eastern Bakony. Protected fauna. Status in the Bakony: unknown at present. VI. Family: LIBYTHEIDAE Libythea celtis (LAICHARTING, 1782) Nettle-tree Butterfly (Map 24, Item 80) Very rare and local with restricted populations flying within the region. Overwintering specimens of this uni vol tine species can be seen in March/April. Their progeny emerge in June/July and fly through until August prior to hibernation. The earliest recorded specimens were reported from the Tihany Peninsula before World War II. In the 1970's numerous sigil
