Most of the samplings were made in summer. Netting technique was used to collect butterflies, but larger moths were mainly recorded by lamp at night. In this paper 616 species are reported. The survey carried out in this region of the Bakony shows four special characteristics of the rich butterfly and larger moth fauna. Characteristic species associated with heated, closed thermophilous oak or turkey oak forests, such as Marámba quercus, Paraboarmia viertln, Phalera bucephaloides, Scotochrosta pulla, Ocneria rubea were found during the sampling at Csabrendek Öreg hill and at Deáki and Városi forest in Sümeg. Species associated with dry open grassland and calcareous open rock grasslands, such as Eupithecia gueneata, Eupithecia graphata, Simyra nervosa, Cryphia domestica are also typical fauna elements. The geological structure of the area is characterized by calcareous planation surface covered by acid grave sedimentastions where Calluna fields can be found. (Sümeg Városi forest, Nyirád Felsö-Nyirádi forest, etc.) From this area, several species normally rare in Hungary and typical of acid grassland and Calluna heath were recorded for example Anarta myrtilli, Lycophotia porphyrea, Xestia castanea. Since the surveyed habitats are richer in birch trees than other part of the Bakony, species typical of birch forests were found here in high abundance during the sampling at night (Endromis versicolora, Tetheella fluctuosa, Falcaria lacertinaria, Furuncula bicuspis, Apatele cuspis). The area around the Nyirád Darvas-tó is especially rich in this kind of species. A rather scarce species, Leucodonta bicoloria, was recorded here, although it was not encountered during the present survey. Bakonyalja is rich in water-influenced habitats and it is featured by alternating marshes, semi-natural wet grasslands and riverine willow and alder woodland. The faunistical elements of this area are entirely different from the other part of the mountain. This kind of water influenced habitats was exa-mined around Csabrendek Nyíres Meleg brook and Sümeg Szilas Meleg brook, and near the Nyirád Kerekes forest. The following significant species were collected in these habitats: Maculinea teleius, Maculinea nausithous, Euphydryas aurinia, Stegania cararia, Epirrhoe pupillata, Diachrysia zosimi, Phragmatiphila nexa.
