(1817): Versuch eines topographisch-mineralogischen Handbuches von Ungern. Oedenburg. 18th CENTURY DATA ABOUT THK MANGANESE ORES OF BAKONY MTS; Manganese ore of Urkut was known to be mentioned first by J. BÖCKE (1874). The ore deposit was explored by V. MEINHABDT (1917), the ore has been mined since then with short interrutions. The little manganese deposit at Eplény (now belongs to Zirc) was discovered by J. BALÁZS in 1924. Exploration work was started in 1928 by I. VELTY, the mining activity continued from 1932 till 1975. This article calls attention to th^ fact, that these ores were recognized as early as the end of the lB'th century. The first correct identification of the manganese minerals of the Bakony Mts. was done by MATHIAS PILLER (1733-1788), the first professor of Natural History at the Royal Hungarian University from 1774 till 1788. Professor PILLER had a great collection of animals, plants, and minerals, collected mainly by him. The century catalogue of the mineral collection lists three specimens from the mountains around Urkut, two of them from the mine St. Stephen. At least three, but may be five specimens came from Eplény. According to the original descriptions 7 specimens were black, massive, hard Mn-oxide ore (psilomelane) , and one specimen was grey Mn-oxide ore (pyrolusite) . SÁMUEL ZAY, who studied mineralogy from PILLER at the university, published a "Hungarian Mineralogy" in 1791. This book includes the first printed reference to the manganese ore of Eplény by Zirc. PÁL KITAIBEL (1757-1817), professor at the University, took a long field-trip to the Bakony Mts. in 1799. He may have collected the two manganese oxide ore samples registered in the catalogue of his mineral collection during this travel. One of the specimens was a wad-like mineral from Urkut, the other may have been a manganiferous crust from the iron pits around Városlőd. Early topographical mineralogy handbooks of Hungary (V. SCHÖNBAUER, 1810; CH.A. ZIPSER, 1817; M. TÓTH, 1882) haven't mentioned the manganese minerals of the Bakony Mts. The re-discovery of these localities happened many years after the pioneer recognitions of PILLER, ZAY, and KITAIBEL. The Appendix of the article contain the original entries of PILLER's and KITAIBEL 's catalogues and annotations concerning the systematics of the manganese minerals of that age.
