INVESTIGATIONS ON THE FLORA AND VEGETATION OF KESZTHELY-MOUNTAINS Keszthely-mountains - with its highest point of 441 m above the sea level - is the Western constituent of the Hungarian mountain system of medium height level. From the point of view of floristical geography it belongs to the Balatonicum floristical district (on the Northern shore of Balaton-lake) of Bakonyicum floristical region in the Pannonian flora. Its territory is dissected into two parts of the Northern basalt- and of the Southern dolomite region by the Pannonian sediments of Vindornya—Zsid-basin. The dolomite vegetation of Keszthely-mountains can be regarded as one of the areas of richest floristical composition in Hungary because of several phytogeographical properties as foUows. Pannonian endemisms, European, Eurasian elements take part up about 50% in the flora. A serious evolutionary effect has been taken on the establishment of endemic species and plant communities by the litological and geomorphological features of dolomite row material (e. g. Seseli leucospermum, karstic dolomite grassland and shrub vegetation: Festuca glauca-Seseli leucospermum swards, Fraxinus ornus-Quercus pubescens-Cotinus coggygria shrubs). The Northern hillsides of cold microchmate play a role as shelters for glacial rehct vegetation (e. g. Primula auricula ssp. hungarica, Festuca glauca-Bromus pannonicus swards, Calamagrostis varia, Carex alba, Fraxinus-Fagus mixed forests). The grass and shrub communities of hillsides of Southern exposition contain several thermophylous species of IUyric, Submediterranean and Subatlantic regions (e. g.) Hippocrepis comosa, Jurinea mollis beside of species of Pannonian sand-region - Fumana procumbens, Onosma wisianii ...). A number of species demonstrates the historico-phytogeographical importance of Hungarian mountain system of medium height level (Archimatricum) on the floristical migration and on the development of vegetation in and after Glacials from the Carpathians to the Hungarian Plain (e. g.. Daphne cneorum ssp. cneorum, Dianthus lumnitzeri, D. plumarius, Stipa-species). Some Submediterranean—Subatlantic species reaches the Northern — North-Eastern boarder of its area in grassland and forest communities of the region studied (Ophrys fuciflora, Ruscus aculeatus, R. hypoglossum, Asphodelus albus, Tamus communis, Cyclamen europaeus). Several species of Boreal, Alpine and Carpathian origin increase the richness of vegetation (e. g. Sphagnum-species, Drosera-species f, Andromeda poly folia f, Cimicifuga europaea, Cardaminopsis petraea, Leontodon incanus and Myurella julacea, Scapania calcicola bryophytes). The forest communities of Keszthely-mountains are enumerated on the basis of chmatic—zonahty : - zonal communities are Quercus cerris-, Q. petraea-, Quercus-Carpinus-iotests, - extrazonal communities are Fagus silvatica-ioiests, - intrazonal communities are Fraxinus omus-0 - intrazonal communities are Fraxinus ornus-Quercus pubescens-Cotinus coggygria shrub-forests, - azonal communities are Alnus glutinosa-foiests with Petasytes hybridus or with Dryopteris cristata. A number of exogenetic vegetation units developed by human activity can be distinguished in this area (e. g. Pinus nigra-, Robinia pseudo-acacia forests, pastures heavily grazed earlier but degradated today). A szerző címe (Author's address) : DR- SZABÓ István H-8 360 Keszthely Deák F. u. 16.
