THE STATE OF FAUNISTICAL STUDIES ON CHIRONOMIDS (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMIDAE) IN THE CATCHMENT AREA OF LAKE BALATON Reviewing the literature and their own results the authors discuss the state of chironomid studies in lake Balaton catchment area. Former data on the occurrence of sediment- and periphyton-dwelling chironomids reveal the advantages and gaps of previous investigations which induces the thorough study of chironomids in the area, carried out by this team. The regular sampling that began in 1978 has already provided lots of new informations, e.g. about the role of chironomids in the matter- and energy-cycle and about the profile of their head capsule remains in the sediment furthermore about, the characteristics of their population dynamics and the sewuence of Chironomus species indicating water-quality changes along the river Zala. The list of 103 chironomid taxa, reported from the area, has also been compiled. 3esides all the existing literature data, it contains the taxa that occurred in thte authors' material first, 39 of them being new for the fauna of the area and 21 for that of Hungary. The conclusions drawn about the state of studies emphasize the need for an ecological approach, too. A szerzők cime /Authors
