VONYÓ, ANITA: THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE ERECTION OF THE LATINCA STATUE IN KAPOSVÁR IN THE MIRROR OF SOMOGY COUNTY SOURCES In the centre of Kaposvár the statue of Latinca Sándor, the leading figure of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in Somogy County, had stood in the square named after him until the beginning of the 1990-s. The work of art was removed after the change of the system, and the square was renamed as Europe square in 1998. The statue determining the character of the county seat for 30 years and the circumstances of its being brought to life may be interesting to those receptive to local history. During the 1950-s the idea of raising a statue to the memory of Latinca Sándor emerged several times in the leadership of the town of Kaposvár, but the decision makers were hindered in realizing the statue by several causes. However, with the 40th anniversary of the proclamation of the Soviet Republic approaching, the town wished to have a worthy celebration. On 18 July 1958, the Kaposvár Town Council Executive Committee conducted a competition for the erection of the statue of Latinca, which was unveiled on 7 November 1962. The work was hindered by several factors - a row of financial irregularities. The aim of the present study is to present these processes. SZÁNTÓ LÁSZLÓ: THE STATUE OF NAGY IMRE IN KAPOSVÁR On 15 June 1989 the native town was among the first ones to immortalize the memory of the martyr-fated prime minister on the wall of the house where he was bom with the memorial tablet unveiled on the occasion of the reburial of the executed martyrs of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence. Not much later, in the summer of 1990, the Historic Justice Committee initiated that the public of Kaposvár should pay a tribute to the historic role Nagy Imre played, by raising a full-figure statue. The study presents the six-year history of the raising of the statue not quite devoid of contradictions. Due to the social-economic problems and political-public life struggles following the initial enthusiasm of the system changing years, the cause did not get appropriate attention, so until 1994 no essential progress was made in the realization of the plan. In the middle of the 1990-s the public life factors of Kaposvár and Somogy County joined forces at last, thus the Nagy Imre Statue Foundation and the native town succeeded in realizing the plan of the statue. By raising a work of art representing real artistic value in a centrally situated site, the native land immortalized in a worthy and expressive way the memory of a man of the people, a statesman who remained loyal to his people even in his death. At the unveiling ceremony of the full-figure statue on 23 October 1996 it was rightly worded to say that with this act Nagy Imre finally “arrived home”.
