ABSTRACTS NAGY-TÓTH, MÁRIA: THE LETTERS OF JAKOB KLAIN, THE BATTHYÁNYS’ APOTHECARY IN SZALÓNAK 1635-1657 In her study, the author seeks an answer to the question of what was expected of an apothecary in a 17th century baronial court, namely in that of the Batthyánys. The analysis of the letters reveals in which period Jakob Klain was in the Batthyánys’ service, how much salary he received, how and with what means he performed the duties entrusted to him: the preparation of drugs, the cure of the family members, people of the court and the prisoners. GŐZSY, ZOLTÁN: BOROUGH GOVERNMENT AND JURISDICTION IN SOMOGY COUNTY IN THE 18TH CENTURY THROUGH THE EXAMPLE OF SZIGETVÁR The study presents the bases the operation of the municipal structure through the example of a Somogy County borough which has the greatest quantity of primary sources concerning the local government. The author outlines the administrational characteristics of the 18th century Somogy County boroughs, then details and assesses the structure and the operation of Szigetvár’s magistrate, the network of the municipal officers, the tendencies observable in their activities, and the main issues of the operation of the lower level jurisdiction. The changes and the tendencies that had occurred in the municipal administration are placed in a broader context, interpreted and confirmed by examples, then they are compared with other South-Transdanubian boroughs of a similar character. The study presents the development of Szigetvár in a period when the changes in its legal position and circumstances and the continuously growing and specializing tasks pose a challenge to the operation of the local magistrate and examines the answers given to them. RÉCSEI, BALÁZS: THE LIVE-STOCK OF SOMOGY COUNTY ON THE BASIS OF THE REGISTRATION PERFORMED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR 1870 (SOURCE PUBLICATION) With the passing of Act III of 1869, Parliament ordered a census and a live-stock registration. Both were performed at the beginning of 1870 and were of a special importance in the source-basis of Hungarian statistics and historical statistics, because it may be considered the first Hungarian official census as it was the first time such a census was carried out on the territory of the countries of the Hungarian Crown on a governmental initiative. In the introductory study the national and Somogy County aspects of the history of the census can be followed. The reader can learn about the personal, material and financial conditions, the difficulties that ensued from them. That is, we can have a look behind the scenes of the preparation and the performance of the census. The paper strongly emphasizes that the published figures must be handled with a severe criticism, because the precise extent of the data-concealment cannot be determined. Orientation in the source-publication part following the study is facilitated by the settlement name-index. The live-stock registration follows the contemporary governmental scheme. Both the introductory study and the source publication are unique of their kind. This is the first detailed account of the performance of such a large-scale undertaking on the territory of a municipality. Besides, the present source publication is the first one which, elaborating the settlement tables, presents at a village level, all the data registered on the territory of a municipality, included in one of the tables -about useful domestic animals- of the registration. 297
