SUMMARIES VARGA, SZABOLCS: HUNGARIGA RESEARCHES IN GRAZ In the course ofhistory the Hungarian Kingdom had always been in close connection with the Austrian provinces, so with Styria as well, Owing to this fact, the provincial archives of Graz has several sources informing of events in Hungary, that is, considered Hungarica. Naturally, the vast majority of them are related to the nearby southern Transdanubian territories, in the first place the counties of Somogy, Baranya and Zala, therefore they are important for those dealing with that region. Hungarian historiography has shown an interest of varying intensity in the sources found in Graz and no attempt has been made at their systematic exploration so far. In the first part of the study its historiography is presented. It proves that the Croatian historiographers have utilized the various materials of the Styrian archives better. One of the most important collections is the so-called Militaria, which contains documents concerning the defensive system against the Ottomans, dating from the beginning of the 16th century. With the support of the Somogy County Archives, out of the sources of this fonds dated between 1509 and 1542 the documents related to the Hungarian Kingdom have been selected, their exact provenance and concise regesta is contained in the list forming the second part of the study. NAGY-TÓTH, MÁRIA: THE LETTERS OF VALENTIANUS PURGOLT, THE NEOPHYTE PHYSICIAN OF THE BATTHYÁNY FAMILY, 1622-1636 (SECOND PUBLICATION) The author presents the letters of Valentianus Purgolt, court physician of Batthyány, Ferenc II, written to his master, which are preserved in the Hungarian National Archives. The source publication is the continuation of the study published in the archival year-book of 2007. The author considers the publication of the letters important because in Hungary only few sources have remained which are related to the military events happening in the German provinces during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). GŐZSY, ZOLTÁN: MERCHANTS IN SZIGETVÁR AND IN SOUTHERN SOMOGY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 18TII CENTURY The study examines the commercial processes of the first decade of the 18th century in the Sounthem Somogy region. In that period Szigetvár had various central functions generating each other. The commercial role oí Szigetvár was strengthened to a great extent by the presence of the military and the relative safety. The commercial habits and the ethnic composition of the merchants were changed by the Rákóczi War of Independence gaining ground, the conflicts between the Kuruts and Serbian troups, and the atrocities committed against the Serbian and Hungarian population. After 1703-1704 the merchants of Pest became ousted and their role was taken over by the Serbians arriving mainly from the south, who continued their activity partly from the Turkish Empire, partly from Slavonian territory, settling down partly in some major settlements of Southern Transdanubia (Pécs, Mohács, Szigetvár, Siklós). The German merchants must also be mentioned, who carried on their activity mainly from Pécs, Szigetvár and Eszék. By the first decade of the 18th century the commercial forms, forums, trends and tendencies had been shaped which remained determinant in the region until the end of the 1760s. The directions oi commerce were determined by the connections of the merchants and the system of those connections. Nationality and linguistic competence played a determinant role in all this. The study shows how and with what products the merchants living in Szigetvár traded and what strategies they formed under the influence of the military events of the War of Independence. 175
