County attended the institute. The author analyzes their collected data. The paper shows that the students from Somogy represented 12% of the university students and theirs was one of the most populous county delegations. A separate chapter is devoted to the evaluation of the students from Somogy according to religion, social origin and residence. After finishing their studies, the students began their office careers. The author presents examples of young school-leavers starting work at county offices. In the last chapter of the study we may read about some students' proficiency at school, crossing over between schools and the schooling strategies of some families, on the basis of examples from Győr, Zagreb and Pécs. MÁTÉ GÁRDONYI: THE PIARIST PATRONAGE IN SOMOGY COUNTY In the modern Hungarian history of education a great role was played by the Piarist Order (Scholae Piae, order of pious schools) which became the teaching order having the largest number of schools after the abolition of the Order of Jesuits. At the beginning of the 19th century the Order was granted considerable estates for the maintenance of its schools, and the majority of the land was situated in Somogy County. Here the Piarists became the patrons of four parishes together with the estates, which entailed special rights and obligations. Because patronage was considered as the complex of the rights and obligations attached to the estates, information related to it can be found mainly in documents of economic nature, which are kept at the Somogy County Archives. These documents have already been processed from an economic historical point of view, but they are important for the ecclesiastical history as well. The present paper examines how the Piarist Order fulfilled its obligations as patrons. BALÁZS RÉCSEI: THE HISTORY OF THE MONOGRAPHY OF SOMOGY COUNTY IN THE MIRROR OF THE DOCUMENTS The author presents the creation and antecedents of the basic work of Somogy County local historiography, commonly called „the Csánki". In his studies and source publications we can trace half a century of efforts to publish a monography in Somogy. We may get an insight into the difficulties of preparation, source collection, wiring, compilation and publication. We also learn why the Somogy volume became „the Csánki", although the arduous, meticulous work of compilation was done by Aladár Vende while the other volumes of the series Counties and Cities of Hungary are called „the Borovszky", after the family name of the editor-in-chief. We get to know the people by their names who took part or wished to take part in the work, and also those who refused, among them the reasons of Henrik Marczali. In his paper the author devotes a considerable space to the development of the financial background, the creation of the illustrations, and the reception of the volume. It will also be clear to us who or what is to blame for the weaker parts of the monographv published in 1914. The value of the publication is further enhanced by the fact that a monography-historical work of this character and depth is hardly known in our local historiography. JÁNOS NÜBL: THE POSITION OF SOMOGY COUNTY BEFORE WORLD WAR I, IN THE MIRROR OF STATISTICS In his study the author wishes to give a general presentation of the situation of Somogy County at the beginning of last century. The County's administrational, political, demographical, national, denominational, educational, occupational and economic circumstances are illustrated, with the help of contemporary sources. One of these sources, the statistical list of data of the 1910 census made it possible for the one-time characteristics, specialities of Somogy to be shown in regional comparison.
