Public service report The Communications Museum Foundation was established as of January 1, 1990, by telco Magyar Telekom, the Hungarian Postal Service, and communications transmitter Antenna Hungária. The purpose was to nurture the joint museum heritage of the three founders, to present it to the public, and to process it in a scientific manner. The Foundation was registered by the Budapest Municipal Court under Number 429. Since 1998, it has operated as a public service organization of special significance. The foundation performed the tasks set in the annual work plan. We celebrated the 125th anniversary of the start-up of Hungary’s first telephone switchboard. In doing so, we unveiled a bust of Tivadar Puskás in front of Magyar Telekom’s headquarters. As part of an appropriate celebration of World Post Day, we unveiled a statue of Péter Opris, the first post office manager to work in the city of Pécs, in that city. Over the course of the year, we organized twenty-one temporary and three new permanent exhibitions. As far as the increases in our collections in 2006 were concerned, our collection of Hungarian stamps grew by 50 091 and of international stamps by 20 719, while our miscellaneous stamp museum collections rose by 443, our Postal Museum artefact collection increased by 136, our Postal Museum document collection grew by 3117 and our library books went up by 541. We had 124 363 visitors to the foundation museums including branches. We had 108 researchers working in our specialized libraries, and 1179 visitors to our labour archives. There were 116 professional meetings held in the Postal Museum auditorium. Our participation in the nationwide Museum Mayday, Museum Midsummer’s Nights and Hungarian Heritage Protection Day programmes was qualified as a major success. The foundation did not conduct any entrepreneurial activity, and therefore, had no related income. It is independent of all political parties and conducts no political activity.
