József Hajdú: Postal Museum Photography on the Internet In 2003 we won a grant of HUF 20 million offered by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications with a proposal involving e-World - Digital content and culture. The Postal Museum used this money to replace its obsolete information technology system and expand its network, to upgrade the Foundation’s website, and to introduce virtual exhibits. Projects included a virtual Museum ofTelephony exhibit completed in 2004, as well as the computerisation of the most valuable photographs in the Postal Museum’s collection of photos and other images. There are over 5,500 such photographs on the Internet. They cover postal history from 1870 to today, offering documents grouped in eight sections. Visitors to the Postal Museum website can view albums, miscellaneous images, portraits, postal images, and pictures from the worlds of radio and television, transport and delivery, the telephone, and the telegraph. László Jakab: Museum of Telephony’s virtual exhibit The Postal Museum website is located at www.postamuzeum.hu . It has been enlarged and contains two new menu items, the Photograph Collection, and the Museum ofTelephony. The author reviews the latter, a processing of the entire exhibition. The show, called From Noise Barrier to WorldWideWeb, presents the history of telecommunications. An Internet visit offers a variety of details. Visitors can learn the histories of the museum and of the building in which it is located. They also may access images of 230 artefacts and documents and trace the history of the telephone in Hungary from its beginnings in 1881 to today. The website has the options of texts in English and German. It recently became urgent to rebuild the historical stable and the brick fence around the facility and to build a roof over the motor-powered vehicles and the postal freight car, the latter of which was also in dire need of restoration. This article reports on the process, starting with designs in 1999 to project completion in 2004. It includes all renovation and construction, one part of which was erection of the world’s first memorial to telecom workers. The memorial is to telecom staff who lost their lives while performing their duties. Ibolya Bartók: Forster Memorial Day at the Postal Museum Forster Memorial Day was held on December 3, 2004, to mark the 120lh birthday of Dr. Károly Forster (1884-1960), who was once the deputy director of the postal services.
