Mrs Gergely Kovács The Activity of the Foundation of the Postal and Telecommunications Museums in 1997 The Report examines the year’s work under the headings listed in the Plan of Action adopted by the Board of Trustees, carried out in line with the budget adopted, with the Founders’ amendments, on June 13,1997. Management and administration The following is the position with obtaining and exchanging tenancies and purchasing premises: • By renting half the commercial premises on the ground floor of No. 18, Paulay Ede utca, the two museums have obtained a dry, well-lit store for assembling exhibitions. There is sufficient space for putting exhibitions together and for storing the materials of travelling exhibitions. • The collection store provided by the Real Estate Division of Matáv (Hungarian Telecom) PLC in the attic of the Rákospalota Telephone Exchange offers convenient accommodation for the document archive and some 1500 objects of telecommunications history, hitherto stored in various places. This was only the second occasion in its 107- year history (after the move to the Diósd store provided by Antenna Hungária PLC) when the Postal Museum took possession of a new storage building. • One hundred and fifty-four items were moved into the new store in the Diósd transmitter-station building. • These removals allowed the rented Peterdy utca store to be vacated and the lease terminated. • The basement stores at No. 3, Andrássy út were vacated, except for the furnace room and ventilation areas, and released in exchange for a tenancy of the attic. We obtained consent for this from the National Historic Monuments Office, as requested by the local authority of Budapest’s Sixth District. • Tenancies of two apartments, of 160 and 80 square metres respectively, were obtained on the third floor of No. 3, Andrássy út, with possession of the former in 1997 and the latter in 1998. Turning the attic into a store and these apartments into working areas will meet for the next 25-50 years the space requirements of the Postal Museum and of the Foundation, which has not had premises of its own before. • The Ministry of Transport, Telecommunications and Water Management agreed in part with outline plans for expanding the Stamp Museum’s storage and display area by incorporating unused space at the Erzsébetváros Telephone Exchange. It seems that the engine room and rooms for the main distribution frame and the current-supply equipment may become available. 244
