Miklós Dérszegi: p. 66 New Archive Materials: Cable Network Measuring Instruments An important aspect of the Museum’s work is acquisition, preservation and display of technical equipment for public telecommunications and the tools used for construction, installation and maintenance purposes. One of the major areas in the wide-ranging task of ensuring continuous operation of wired telecom systems is the operation and maintenance of the long-distance cables of the national telephone system. A decisive part is played in this by electrical, transmission and fault-location measurements made on the long-distance cables. This article on a subject largely unfamiliar to laymen looks at the circumstances in which cable measurements are taken and presents some of the characteristics and uses of nine now obsolete measuring instruments obtained by the Museum in 1993. Dr Miklós Kamody: p. 72 The Story of a Letter Containing Money Lost in the Post The author, through the story of a letter containing money which was lost in the 18th century, offers an insight into the postal service of the period. Imperial Captain Vince Haagen, while stationed in Miskolc during the wars with Russia and Turkey, had lent the Corporation the sum of 1,000 Rhenish florins. But the captain was frequently reposted, and the letter returning the money went astray, taking a very long time to reach its addressee. Haagen lodged a complaint with Miskolc Corporation in 1790, and several letters were exchanged. The author draws on documents he found in Borsod County archives for his account of the letter’s adventures, the way the receipts and letters were handled, and the city minutes and postmaster’s reports written on the affair. Dr Kálmán Sebestyén: p. 77 The Post Office in Marosszék in the 18th Century Valuable source materials on Hungarian postal history are to be found in archives in Transsylvania, where they await processing and publication. Particularly extensive are the postal history materials in the archives of the Marosszék district and the city of Marosvásárhely (Tirgu Mure§), which apart from their local importance, shed light on the postal service of Transsylvania in general and all the Habsburg dominions. This study covers the difficulties encountered by the Transsylvania Post Office during the Rákóczi War of Independence and the structure of the Habsburg postal service that developed after the war. 140
