A HUNGARIAN POET. (FKOM OUB CORRESPONDENT.) VIENNA, Friday Niqht. Hungary will on Sunday celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of her greatest poet, Sándor Petőfi. Every large town and many of the villages will commemorate the death of the poet of love and liberty who, when his countrymen rose to defend their rights, exchanged his pen for a sword. He took part in the battle of Schässburg on July 30, 1849, as Aide de Camp to General Bem, and was never seen, alive or dead, after that disastrous day. The principal celebration will take place at Schässburg, and will be attended by Deputations from all parts of the country, including members of Parliament, journalists, Literary and Scientific Societies, and Students’ Associations. Maurus Jókai, the Poet Laureate, was invited to deliver an oration, but his great age prevents his doing so. A poem written by him, “ The Apotheosis of Petőfi,” will, however, be recited at the various places where the celebration is held. The Petőfi Society has issued an appeal to the nation to subscribe funds sufficient to erect a jutass a* B!iárp,'fh’ 'jhich it is proposed shall contain complete sets of all the editions of his works, and his manuscripts, including the first Hungarian translation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, together with portraits and other relics.
