PREFACE

I am pleased to write introductory lines to this volume, which contains the lectures of the conference organized by the four theological faculties of Babe§-Bolyai University and the Faculty of Theology of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, held in the autumn of 2007 at Esztergom. Ten years ago His Eminence, Dr. Péter Erdő, the then Rector of Pázmány Péter University took the initiative that the theological faculties of Babe§-Bolyai University in Kolozsvár and Pázmány Péter Catholic University organize scholarly conferences in the spirit of open-minded dialogue, keeping in mind the scientific criteria of the theological disciplines, this way accomplishing Chapter II, Point 5 of the decree Unitatis Redintegratio of the Second Vatican Council, and the intentions of Points 88 and 89 of the Ecumenical Directory of 1993.

As our readers will be able to see, this volume is really objective, scientific, and open to the spirit of ecumenism, even if it occasionally reflects some divergence of views. The studies are characterized by the common faith and erudite fastidiousness of the contributors, through which - despite all the sometimes observable polemics, - shines the conviction that we search for unity, the only truth, with the service of science.

Being confident that this conference volume means a small step in the direction of understanding, accepting each other, and - what is the most important point - showing loving kindness towards each other, I recommend it to all benevolent people.
