Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi: The rules concerning bishops in the Decretales. Pseudo-Isidorianae, especially the regulation on the death of bishops

RULES CONCERNING BISHOPS 145 troductory study.9 Gilchrist's section about the sources of the collection is very helpful for the analysis of the chapters.10 1. The papal chapters are attributed to 30 different popes in the material of episcopal discipline.11 Only two authors have significant numbered texts i. e., St. Gregory I and St. Leo I. Eight-eight chapters are signed by their name. Moreover, Pope Calixtus (217-222), Pope Silvester (314-315), Pope Gelasy I (492-494), and Pope Symmachus (498-514), are each represented by four chapters in this material. This statistic clearly indicates that the pseudo-isidorian influence is very strong in this collection.12 There are 146 chapters from the Dccrctalcs Pscudo-Isidoranac in the whole collection. Forty one chapters on episcopal discipline spring from this source. But we know from the textual-critical analysis of Gilchrist that the author also used this half-false canon law collection for the material of Pope Gregory the Great.13 9 Cf. GILCHRIST, J.T.
