HUNGARIAN BIBLE TRANSLATIONS 233 ÁRMIN PERLS (1853-1914), a rabbi and a Doctor of Philosophy. He was an expert in Haggadic literature and wrote several studies on this theme.80 He translated The Book of Jeremiah and The Lamentations of Jeremiah and published them in Pécs (1889). IGNÁC REICH (1821-1887) a rabbi, scholar and an expert in the Talmud. Among his works he translated the national anthem of Hungary, the Hymn by Ferenc Kölcsey, into Hebrew. He also translated the Penta­teuch and published it in Budapest (1879). JÓZSEF SCHÖN (1846-1910), a teacher and director. He wrote books and studies for school usage, among them a Jewish book of relig­ious instruction. He also translated The Book of Esther and published it in Budapest (1891). JENŐ HERSKOVICS probably a rabbi, translator of The Book of Joel (1894). MÁRK STEINER (1865-?) a rabbi, translator of The Book of Micha (1894). VILMOS ROSENBERG probably the Jewish translator who wrote a version of The Book of Esther (1895). MÓR LICHTMANN (1864-?), a rabbi who translated the Visions of Zechariah (1895). THE ISRAELITE HUNGARIAN LITERARY SOCIETY was estab­lished in Budapest in 1894 to supply Jewish readers with religious and scientific literature. They published 48 almanacs compiled by VILMOS BACHER (1877-1913) and JÓZSEF BÁNÓCZI (1878-1892), and the first Jewish version of the Old Testament. The latter was published in Budapest, in 1896. The next edition, published in 1908, was translated by Immanuel Löw, Vilmos Bacher, József Bánóczi and Sámuel Krausz.81 MENACHEM STERN made a poetical rendering of The Book of Es­ther (1900). MÓR FÉNYES (1866-1949) a rabbi, Doctor of Philosophy at Pest.82 He translated The Book of Esther and a large part of the so called „Frenkel Bible”. 80 A magyarok Mózese.
