HUNGARIAN BIBLE TRANSLATIONS

Preface

In this study we would like to summarize the history of Hungarian Bible translations. For this surpose we will have a look at more than 200 works.1 This relatively large number does not mean complete Bible versions only, but also includes the translations of separate Biblical books and paraphrases of Psalms. In each case we wanted to find the man behind the translator, so we collected data about their education and motivations. As we did this regardless of the translator’s togerher with the history of Bible translations we also obtained a picture about the background of Theological studies and the different stations of Hungarian grammar and spelling development. We also wanted to reveal the sources the translators used, and the influence they exercised on each other. We quoted some works written as long as the subject if they were connected with theology. From the translations we quoted very little as put thing quotations illustrating the development of Hungarian language into a study written in English would be of little significance.
