24 C. DUGGAN Alexander in Regisíro Spalaten. episcopo, later emended with the superscript variant alias Lucius for the pope’s name, and the correction archi- episcopo for the recipient’s office. The incorrect attribution to Lucius III was transmitted to Sang., 1 Comp, and X, with the variants Spolet., Spoletano, Spaloton., Spal. and others, for the recipient. In his study of the register of Alexander III in the hands of the canonists, Holtzmann noted the archival transmission of the letter, edited by Farlati, with the address venerabili fratri G(erardo) Salonitano archiepiscopo apostolice sedis legato, and the date Datum Beneventi ii kal. februarii, that is Benevento, 31 January 1168-70. The archival and canonical transmission of the letter are separately registered in JL 11690 and 14100, but relate to one and the same letter. Alexander III in Registro Spalatensi archiepiscopo.
