The letter in fact follows the familiar formulae of papal letters to religious houses, concerning their relations with their diocesan bishop, and is presumably a section of a longer letter to such a house or filiation in the Nitra diocese. To the bishop of Vác23 Ea noscitur Celestine III to the bishop of Vác, on the absolution of those who do violence to clerks The decretal Ea noscitur was issued by Celestine III, within the dating limits 5 November 1191 and 4 June 119224, as recorded in an excerpt from the the registers of Clement III and Celestine III in the Siguënza manu­script (Seg. 52). In response to the recipient bishop’s consultation, the pope dealt with various aspects of the canonical requirements of those who lay violent hands on clerks, but lack the capacity to travel to the apostolic 23 Celestine Hi's decretal Ex parte Bartholomei ( WH 450, JL 16604), occurs with various addresses (Aurelian., Varm. or Varin., Variensi, Varién.). Following Th einer, it is addressed to Séez (Sagiensi) in JL, and Friedberg noted the conjecture by Gonzalez that the reading was Vaciensi, Vác.
