Sacra theologia
THE ECCLESIOLOGICAL WRITINGS OF SAINT JEROME... 101 primarily attempted to relate their summarized norms to apostolic authority. An excellent example of this is the Didache from the 2nd century - also known as “The Doctrine of the Twelve Apostles”8 - ; or the Traditio Apostolica from the 3rd century.9 For this very reason, when we speak of the ecclesiological character of the authority manifested in the Church, we must pay particular attention to the writings of the Church Fathers. The patristic sources describe in a particularly impressive way the practical consequences of the Church’s sacramentalism, and they also present in crystal-clear terms its theoretical, ecclesiological background, in other words, the unity of the Church. Among the authors - in addition to those who have already been mentioned - I must mention first of all St. Cyprian (f258)10, St. Ambrose (I397)11, St. Jerome (f419/420)12, and St. Augustine (|430)13; and among the popes, St. Leo the Great (440-461)14 and St. Gregory the Great (590-604)15, whose ecclesiological concept had the most significant influence on the future canon law collections.16 The most prominent person in this list is St. Cyprian, who speaks in several of his writings about the mandate of bishops, the preservation of the 8 Rordorf, W. - Tuillier, A., La Didaché (SCh 248), Paris 1978. 9 Botte, B., Hippolyte de Rome.
