310 SZABOLCS ANZELM SZUROMI, O.Praem. nation of the qualities and the profession of creed took place in the presence of clerics, laymen, bishops of the province, which assembly especially included the metropolitan.47 Canons of the Statuta Ecclesiae Antiqua give minute directions about the degrees of Holy Order. These contain rules about psalmist (c. 98); janitor [o.vtiarius] (c. 97); lector (c. 96); exorcist (c. 95); acolyte (c. 94); subdeacon (c. 93); deacon (c. 92); presbyter (c. 91); and about bishops (c. 90). Moreover, these canons give some rules on virgins who are devoted to God (c. 99); widows (c. 100); and other persons who have made public profession (cc. 101-102). Ordination is an essential element receiving of any degree except the degree of psalmist.48 Reception happens mostly from the hands of the bishop. The text of the Statuta Ecclesiae Antiqua contains expressively the active cooperation of the bishop in the deacon ordination. The deacon can be ordained only by a bishop {solus episcopus), who blesses him and stretches out his arms over the applicant’s head.49 We know also a short rule about ordination in the Canones apostolid (c. 2),50 which canon law collection springs from the end of the 4'h Century. This canon informs us that the presbyter, deacon and other elected persons for the clerical degree can receive their degree from the bishop.51 The subdeacon’s ordination happens in the discipline of Statuta Ecclesiae Antiqua tres personas unum Deum (...)
